Internet in Macedonia, still slow, expensive and no big choice! But is Telekabel is winning?

by Hans van Bergkamp
For Unet-work.net
Skopje September 6, 2007

Internet in Macedonia moved into a fast compatible battle trying to gain sympathy for the potential users. From the first country in Europe to have over 84% of Macedonia covered by WiFi we should think that Macedonia is going ahead far beyond any average quality, but is this really so? A short overview about different ISP's speed quality and most important prices! This is a overview for the use of private homes. prices per month are in MK dennar 61 MK dennar = 1€
update:
a new price war started between telekabel and ADSL Macedonia soon more update!

** 12 months contract

MT ADSL has regular problems of dropping lines, this special when twice per day the IP is changed. Ones in a month a reset that can drop the connection for over 2 hours! Support is sometimes very unfriendly and many users are planning to end their contract with them and to look elsewhere. Prices mentioned are with no 24 months contract and is offered cheaper with a agreement of 2 years.

OnNet has problems in bad weather conditions and the slow W-ADSL than drops even more down. Poor possible use of VOIP because the slow up and download speed. Price is high and can only e used for a minimum of 2 years!

Telekabel internet can only used in combination of cable TV contract which is 350 den per month. No year contract and fast service. A great extra feature is a fix IP so you can host your own website/databank/mail server and offers in the pro packet 3 fixed IP's! Also because of 2 links, 1 trough MT and 1 through NEOTEL the average line quality is good (4 out of 5)

NEOTEL is not mentioned here as they offer high quality optic internet for professional use only. but for free they have around Macedonia cities some free hot spots.

Unet is the oldest internet provider but has been left behind in fast ADSL connections. They can still be called the best rated dialup service

MOL is also offering wireless but the general quality is poor. They have wireless and cable internet with guaranteed speed

we do have faith that Macedonia will soon come up with better connections speed and prices. A known fact is that Macedonian telecommunication has still a monopoly on fixed lines that is why that for competitors it's still very difficult to offer high speed ADSL over phone line. but plans are made that internet will also e soon available through electric power cables with speed running of to 5000 kbps! MT net has still far out the largest capacity in their gateways connecting Macedonia with Greece OTE and telekom Serbia.

MONOPOLY a Macedonian word? This also came to the attention of the European commission as fast internet is a must for Macedonian citizens their education and a rapid change of their welfare. Some of the home users are changing from ADSL lines to Wireless offers from On.Net (www.on.net.mk) But with their internet service also the speed is slow as they offer to the customers a maximum of Connection bandwidth up to 512kbps, up to 10GB monthly data transfer. Remember when they say up to 512kbps it means it’s the maximum and not guaranteed! This for 15 euro per month VAT NOT included of 18%! Wireless in bad weather conditions are not very stable.

So to go back to the largest still monopole Macedonian telecom as they have the exclusive use for the phone wire. Their equipment that time has been imported from Taiwan and its know for the many server breakdowns. Also the combination of the stations with Siemens and Motorola is still causing lots of protocol errors. For home users a maximum speed is offered of down/upload 512/128 Kbps will cost the consumer over 40 euros per month! Still the data limit is 4 GB! This is very small as with some software updates downloaded from the internet an 8 GB is nothing! So the bill at the end of the month is soon over 80 euro for a slow connection of ADSL!

Also they do not allow more than one PC to be online! So let’s say that a modern household has a child, and the child has a PC in his/her room, the parents have also a PC and father comes home with a laptop. So these are not allowed to be online at the same time! According recent studies most households in the developed countries are having an average of 1.8 computers per household! So Macedonia does not allow their citizens to be a part of the devolved countries.

OnNet started January 2007 with fixed lines but this is still going trough the MT Net lines and calling them has been difficult as the voice broke away for several times. Redialing did not improve the voice quality.

MT The main technical problem is still with the cheap equipment taken from Taiwan years ago. Also the protocol with different brands of hardware from Motorola - Siemens. ISDN which is not really ISDN outside lines with international callers is a special case.

Conclusion: For Macedonia its an important step to invite new investors but the demand fast internet access with no data limit! Also to start with ADSL2 the newest ADSL with possibility of lots of different services such as telephony and digital TV/pay per view. For good and reasonable internet connection which is always on Telekabel is still the best choice. We have tested their ADSL for over a month and the average speed was has been fair. And NO DOWNLOAD LIMIT! Also they do not make any different in prices for professional business or private users as others are doing. ADSL by MT Net is charging business users almost double! Count that most offices have a 8 hours working day sounds ridicules!

ADSL Macedonia the story

By Hans van Bergkamp
For Unet-work.net
Skopje January 21, 2006

Macedonia has 2 mobile operators but only one fixed phone operator: MT (Macedonian Telecommunication) from the beginning of 2004 the first ADSL lines were being offered for a price of (cheapest rate) 50 euros monthly. (Cheapest rates, for small businesses, for the same up and download speed are 100 euros monthly!)
For this you would get 24/7 support trough a toll free number 0800 12345 and 24/7 access to the internet of 128kbps/384kbps up and download.
For Macedonia it has been a very pleasant surprise and lots were even waiting for increase of the service and decrease of the price.
Now after 6 months they came with special offers to clients, witch would be given a 20% discount if they would sign a contract for 2 years with MT ADSL.

But still the speed did not change, even more dropouts came and now even this is on a daily base.
The toll free number is not even to be reached as its non stop occupied.
A new data limit is now in place of 4 Gb per month
The support email address, announced on their website adsl.com.mk is being returned to each sender as it’s in error.
But this is not the end of the problem story!
No steady IP number, number is being changed twice a day!
Very unstable ADSL modems with no automatic reset and needs to be rebooted some 2 times daily!

A client from Skopje, Marija, has been shouted to when after 6 days being with no internet ADSL; the engineer accused her to give illegal access to other person that’s why he has been disconnected!
I never gave any one access on my account! I don’t even know how to do this! He shouted so much to me that my son, 5 years old started to cry!
I complained and reported this to their toll free number and asked 3 times if a supervisor would call me back, they never did!

Slave:
A few weeks ago when I did not have ADSL, he stated, it took me 7 hours to get answered on their service free phone. They stated yes sir we have changed all passwords and login names to all our 7,000 clients! When he asked why they were not informed the other site of the line, ADSL service operator, could not give an answer.
When he dropped the second question why the service free phone has been so busy the operator answered, well sir you must understand that when 7,000 people are calling at the same moment to only 7 operators its normal that the line is so occupied.
When Slave stated to the operator: well sir if you would inform all your 7,000 clients in advance prior to the login/password change trough media or email, or a small note under the page of your expensive monthly bill, you would not receive so many phone call and 5 out of the 7 operator could have a nice coffee brake and surf the internet with google with the magic search word “how to get organized”! The operator hanged up the phone.

I called the service more times than my own godfather!

Gordana (ADSL user from the beginning) I called the service more times than my own godfather!
Since the beginning they have changed 3 times my modem which I paid for!
Also I had to close my email account with mt.net as I am receiving hundreds of spam daily! Mt.net has until today no anti spam software installed for their clients!
It’s funny that free mail services such as Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail solved the spam problem years ago! MT ADSL at the other hand can’t offer this simple service to their customers!
I am using the internet only for a little research for my job and from today I am already to a 800 Mb of data! I have no right to point my finger to them but it seems they or some one hacked my account! Can you imagine if I would besides this, download some software that I would be soon over the limit of their poor 4 GB? I am changing now to cable and will try my luck there!

Nikola:
Than there is another problem which lots experts though it has been a DNS cache problem as lots of internet site were not reachable from connections trough MT. Strange enough other internet providers such as OnNet, MOL and Unet did not have this problem and all internet sites were opening normally on request.
This lasted 9 days! You can’t even imagine when you as a business minded client can’t open sites that are vital for your business to succeed!
From insider reports we found out that MT net IP’s has been blocked for this period because of so the say, DOS attacks from their side.

Conclusion:
While in the whole world and even in many 3rd world countries ADSL is getting cheaper and faster, this with no data limit, Macedonia, with their strange monopoly political agreement for fixed ADSL services, is going backwards instead of forward!
In European countries 4000 to 20,000 kbps are being offered for 24-60 euros monthly with NO DATA limit! Versatel Holland is offering for 38 euros monthly a free phone unlimited to fixed numbers national, Free TV channels in digital quality and fast broadband internet!
With also very instable electric power and low public services this should be looked at urgently especially if Macedonia likes to attract foreign investments!

The 3 most important services are  very unstable in Macedonia: Telecommunications, electric power and water.

Talking with some ADSL users they are now ready to go in public as they collected over 120 users! They are planning to make an organization protecting customer’s rights against broken promises of ADSL MT.
The president, for now wishes to remain not to be known, will also think about some better alternatives and is in contact with some major western internet player. This to offer them to open their business in Macedonia soon. They will also give a positive advice to all the 7,000 MT ADSL users to break their contract with them. Lawyers also have been contacted stated Mr. Igor.
We will also call on al ADSL customers not to pay the whole bill!
